Oaken Lab at Monocle: From Recognition to Conversation
Our relationship with Monocle Magazine, a global authority on design, culture, and considered living, has been a journey from print to the podium.
Most recently, Monocle’s Homeground Talent feature spotlighted Oaken Lab as one of the Indonesian brands shaping contemporary craft and scent. For us, it’s a recognition of the quiet work we’ve been doing: building objects, fragrances, and experiences rooted in intention and detail.
That moment on the page was just the beginning. In August, our co-founder Cynthia Wirjono brought the conversation to life at The Chiefs, Monocle’s leadership forum in Jakarta. Speaking alongside entrepreneurs and cultural figures to an audience of 120 regional delegates, she shared Oaken Lab’s journey, from a small perfume venture in 2018 to a brand with three shops across Indonesia, stocked in esteemed venues such as 25 Hours Jakarta and Potato Head Bali.
The dialogue at The Chiefs went beyond business milestones. It explored the principles that guide our work: craftsmanship as storytelling, design as devotion, and scent as a thread connecting people, places, and memories.
Monocle’s recognition is more than an honour, it’s a reminder that considered ideas travel. From Jakarta to London and beyond, the conversation about craft, culture, and community is shared. As we continue to grow, our goal remains the same: to create with purpose and contribute to a culture that values craftsmanship, connection, and care.
